How to achieve your goals faster Posted: 12 Sep 2015 02:41 AM PDT "I want to be wealthy…" "I want to travel the world and learn more languages…" "I want to lose 10 lbs. this year." We've all dreamed of these lofty goals in life at one point or another. Setting goals is an essential technique to accomplishing what we truly want in our lives, and more importantly —living a more fulfilling life. And the importance of goal setting is only increasing as our ability to focus continues to diminish with the rise of new media and technology. "Setting Goals In Life Is The First Step In Turning The Invisible Into The Visible." —… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Google Maps imagery seems to show what global warming would look like Posted: 11 Sep 2015 04:03 PM PDT Google Maps is showing what appears to be the effects of global warming in southern California. First spotted by Tech.Mic, Google Maps shows a rising water level in coastal areas of California. I tested it for myself, and got no immediate results on the desktop version of Google Maps. After zooming out, the new coastline made itself clear. Areas of Santa Monica, Malibu and Manhattan Beach can be seen with encroaching sea levels. We've reached out to Google for comment, and will update should we hear back. Other sites have imagined this type of scenario, but visualizing the effects of… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Silicon valley down under: The next class of fintech unicorns is bred in Australia & NZ Posted: 11 Sep 2015 01:44 PM PDT Australia and New Zealand are rapidly emerging as two of the healthiest tech ecosystems in the world, where innovation is thriving and venture capital is flowing. Every year, we see more startups from Australia and New Zealand following the same pattern: huge growth, successfully funded, global expansion and billion-dollar valuations. For example, Xero, the small business accounting platform that's taking on Intuit, hails from New Zealand. The company recently raised another US$110 million in funding, which put its valuation at over US$4 billion. Xero is currently laying the groundwork for a US IPO. Enterprise software vendor Atlassian was founded in Australia,… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Google just launched Android Pay, so why do I have two Wallet apps? Posted: 11 Sep 2015 01:12 PM PDT Android Pay launched yesterday to replace Google Wallet with a simpler, quicker contactless payments service. Actually installing the feature is pretty confusing, however. The new Android Pay app is supposed to arrive as an update to the original Google Wallet. However, Google also just launched a a second, completely separate Google Wallet app, which refocuses the platform for person-to-person payments, similar to Venmo or Square Cash. That means that if your old version of Google Wallet hasn't been updated yet, and you try to search the Play Store for Android Pay, you'll see two versions of Google Wallet listed: I mistakenly… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Apple is reportedly making AirPlay a lot more secure and less draining on your battery Posted: 11 Sep 2015 11:50 AM PDT AirPlay, Apple's method for streaming content form one device to another, is reportedly getting an overhaul for iOS 9 which will bring enhanced security. Speaking to 9to5Mac, development house Squirrels was distracted by some new functionality in AirPlay. The team makes an app named Reflector 2, which is "a wireless receiver for mirroring and streaming phones or tablets." A lot of the pairing setups (like how your mobile device interacts with a receiver) have changed. A lot of the exchanges between an iOS device and an Apple TV or any of the receivers have changed. The actual mechanism through which… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sony’s new A7S II records 4k internally in nearly complete darkness Posted: 11 Sep 2015 11:32 AM PDT Sony has a new camera that can see in near pitch-black light – and record it in 4k without any additional gear. The company today announced the A7S II, the successor to the A7S. The original A7S was lauded as the best low-light camera on the market after having been designed specifically for that purpose. While the ridiculous ISO 50-409,600 range hasn't been changed, Sony says the camera will produce less noise than the original A7S. Here's a demo of that performance, where Sony shows off how the camera can practically make nighttime look like a cloudy afternoon: Perhaps more importantly, the… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
How Y Combinator non-profit alum DemocracyOS hopes to upgrade democracy Posted: 11 Sep 2015 11:03 AM PDT Academic and activist Larry Lessig might not be the next president of the United States, but his entry in the race helps bring across the point that democracy should and can be fixed. In that sense, his message is not much different from the mission of DemocracyOS, an Argentine group working to promote collaborative decision-making. Naturally, its co-founder and executive director Pia Mancini is a longtime admirer of Lessig's work. While Mancini may not be as well-known in the general public, her TED talk last year has garnered more than one million views. "How to upgrade democracy for the Internet era" is a good summary of what The DemocracyOS Foundation hopes… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Uber’s new in-car magazine is advertisers’ ticket to targeting local clientele Posted: 11 Sep 2015 09:08 AM PDT Uber is launching its own magazine in celebration of Fashion Week – if you ride one of its NYC cabs, anyway. Called Arriving Now, the publication features "pro tips, hotspots, and exclusive details about upcoming promotions." It will likely be most useful to people who are only in New York City for Fashion Week and are trying to find new things to do during their stay. Though most cab rides are likely too short for reading through the entire publication (although its length isn't specified), Uber says you're allowed to take them with you. There doesn't appear to be an… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The future of wearables: report Posted: 11 Sep 2015 08:44 AM PDT There have been a lot of changes to the mobile platform landscape in recent months. Innovative reimaginings of the way we connect with the world, new products and undeniably out-of-the-box features have made it an exciting time for consumers and the industry alike. But these big, bold changes have also created some uncertainty (and even anxiety) about where these moves are taking the market – especially the critical wearables segment. We're all wondering about where wearables are going, and what the future has in store for the wunderkind of the mobile family. That's one of the reasons why we created… This story continues at The Next Web This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
